Postpartum Doula
A baby can dramatically affect the lives of new parents as well as two or three babies. As lovely a concept a new family is, it still may be a stressful period. A postpartum doula is a neutral third party, non-judgmental woman caregiver with a quiet presence in your home. She gives quality non-intrusive, in-home services for new parents, including physical, emotional and educational support according to the wishes and needs of the family.
After the baby or babies come home, most new parents appreciate the love and support of their own family. Unfortunately, our family members are not always available or have the energy that is necessary in caring for a new baby, let alone multiple babies. Postpartum doulas differ greatly from baby nurses, as they are not there to solely tend the babies. They understand that parents, whether new or experienced, need time to adjust to their additional responsibilities. Postpartum doulas teach, encourage and support parents about their own instincts in meeting each other children’s needs, thus making an easier transition into parenthood.
Most postpartum doulas charge between $25 - $30 per hour depending on her experience and qualifications. Parents of single babies use doulas to help for a week to three weeks from 4 to 8 hours a day. More time may be needed for families having multiples, as their needs may be greater. Overnight, weekends and travel are available. A doula’s duties may include, but are not limited to; caring for the mother, giving her time to recuperate and rest, providing information and support on breast and/or bottle feeding, breast pumps and bottle preparation, newborn care information, helping reduce family stress, screening for postpartum mood disorders, recommending local resources and referrals, providing overnight care and assisting the family when traveling.
She may also perform household tasks such as: grocery shopping, meal preparation, baby laundry, tending older children and providing references to local resources. Childbirth preparation classes may prepare a family for the miracle of birth, but not always the reality of life. Parenthood is a major life transition and the adjustment period feels less overwhelming when doulas are available to address your questions and concerns. It is for this reason that new families value the help a Postpartum Doula
Quality postpartum care is not expensive…it is priceless.
